WILBERT SACKMAN
JERSEYVILLE – Wilbert D. Sackman, 94, passed away at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 22, 2024 at his home in Jerseyville.
Wilbert Donald Sackman was born on May 26, 1930 in Saint Louis, Missouri to Albert and Clara (Fiedler) Sackman.
He married Barbara Edwards at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, Illinois on September 5, 1955.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Sackman and a son and daughter in-law, Mark and Dina Sackman, all of Jerseyville.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as two brothers, Fred and Alfred Sackman.
He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955. He is designated an Atomic Veteran, having witnessed the Operation Ivy test of the hydrogen bomb in the Marshall Islands in 1952 while serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS RENDOVA.
He graduated from Ranken Technical School in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1957. He was the owner-operator of Sackman Plumbing and Heating from 1963 to 1980. His son, Mark, graduated in 1980 and added Air Conditioning to the family business, and Wilbert retired in 2013.
He served a Bailiff for Jersey County Circuit Court for several years. He also served on the board of the Veterans Assistance Committee of Jersey County and the Scholarship Committee of the American Legion.
He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Jerseyville American Legion Post #492, American Legion Honor Guard, Tri County Honor Guard, AMVETS, Knights of Columbus, Patriot Guard Riders. He also enjoyed golfing, trap shooting, motorcycle riding, restoring old cars and motorcycles and was a “fixer” of all things. In addition, he was a founding member of the Moose, Eagles and Elks Lodges and Westlake Country Club.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating.
Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 and the Tri County Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.
Please, in lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be given to Jerseyville American Legion Honor Guard or to the Tri County Honor Guard.
