VERA McFAIN

JERSEYVILLE – Vera Rosalee McFain, 96, passed away peacefully at her home at 11:44 a.m., Friday, September 20, 2024, with her family by her side.

Born on June 7, 1928 in White Hall, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Otis and Myrtle (Hodgerson) Camerer. The last surviving of nine children, Vera spent her early years in Eldred, where she grew up in a large and loving family.

On April 5, 1947, Vera married the love of her life, Russell McFain. They shared many beautiful years together before his passing on February 8, 1971. Together, they were blessed with five children who would become the center of her world.

As a teenager, Vera began her working life at the International Shoe Factory in Jerseyville. Her career later took her to Jersey Community Hospital, where she dedicated many years of service. She retired in 1995 as a Central Supply Technician, leaving behind a legacy of care and commitment to her work.

Vera was a woman of many talents and hobbies. For years, she enjoyed the delicate craft of embroidery until her eyes and hands could no longer keep up. In her later years, she found joy in simpler pastimes, such as completing search word books.  

Vera’s family was her greatest joy. She is survived by her five children and their spouses: Richard and Eva McFain of Carrollton, Terry and Linda McFain of Pocahontas, Marilyn and Lyndon Sickmeier of Jerseyville, Carolyn and Larry Gowin of Jerseyville and Barbara and Junior Davis of Thompsonville; eight gradchildren, Shannon Phelps-Walls and her husband, Steve, of Wood River, Michelle Garrison and her husband, Brad, of Medora, Carrie Ruyle and her husband, Chad, of Jerseyville, Ginger Flowers and her husband, Darren, Jeffery Davis and his wife, Rebecca of Marion, Wayne Davis and his significant other, Bree, of Herrin, Adam McFain and his wife, Sandra, of Washington, DC and Jimmy McFain and his significant other, Lady, of Rosewood Heights; eighteen great grandchildren, Corbin Phelps, Adam Gowin, Nicole Donahue, Tanner Garrison, Trevor Garrison, Andrew McFain, Kaleb Angel, Sarah Angel, Katie Johnson, Hailey Ruyle, Bella Ruyle, Kinley Ruyle, Summer Beasley, River Beasley, Samantha Tesney, Dasha Davis, Ricky Davis, Lucas Davis and Kayley Davis; as well as eleven great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric McFain; as well as her siblings, Darrell (Frances) Camerer, Mary (Robert) Darr, Clover (Lee) Bushnell, Eileen (Albert) Booth, Carl Isaac “Ike” (Matilda “Tille”, Camerer, Sr., Eugene “Gene” (Dorothy) Camerer, Julia (Preston) Curry and Margie (Alvin) Dyer.

Private services were held, and she was laid to rest alongside her husband at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
