SHIRLEY CARTER
JERSEYVILLE – Shirley Jean Carter, 93, passed away at 8:47 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at her home in Jerseyville, following a brief period of declining health.
She was born on May 19, 1931, at the family home near Otterville to the late Walter and Blanche (Hutchinson) Young. The last surviving of ten children, a legacy of strength and resilience defined Shirley’s life.
Shirley’s greatest pride and joy was her family. A dedicated stay-at-home mom to her five children, she found her true purpose in creating a loving and supportive home. In later years, she worked briefly at the Illini Middle School cafeteria, though her heart remained with her family and her home.
In 1969, Shirley moved into her home, where she became a cherished presence in her neighborhood. She enjoyed walking the streets around her home, sipping coffee under her carport with friends and family, and keeping an eye on the comings and goings of her community. A lover of country and western music, Shirley found joy in life’s simple pleasures and treasured the closeness of her family.
Known for her vibrant, sometimes sassy personality, Shirley was unapologetically herself – a quality that endeared her to everyone who knew her. She was a constant source of honesty, warmth, and laughter.
Shirley is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Pam (J.R.) Tonsor of Jerseyville, Sheryl Arnett of Jerseyville and Sandra Ridge of Nebraska; ten grandchildren, Brad (Wendy) Tonsor, Barry Tonsor, Erin (Jimmy) Green, Bobby Tonsor and Jerrod Ogden, all of Jerseville and Jeremy (Alicia) Ridge, John J. Ridge, Courtney (Dustin) Miller of Nebraska, Caitlin Carter of Tennessee and Evan Carter of California; as well as thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved deeply.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Dwayne Groves and Terry Carter; a grandson, Jacob Ogden; and her seven sisters and two brothers.
In accordance with her wishes, no public services will be held. Shirley will be laid to rest with her parents at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
Shirley’s family and friends will remember her as a pillar of love, humor, and authenticity – a woman who lived her life fully and left a legacy of cherished memories.
