SHIRLEY CALVERT

JERSEYVILLE - Shirley Mae Calvert, 93, died at 8:00 a.m., Monday, August 18, 2025 at Jerseyville Manor.

She was born on April 18, 1932 in Saint Louis, Missouri, the daughter of the late John Henry and Helen Clara (Higgins) Cassens.

Shirley grew up in Saint Louis, where she married Robert R. Calvert on May 16, 1959. Together, they made their home there for many years before relocating to Grafton in the late 1980’s. Robert preceded her in death on November 27, 1997.

She worked as a clerk for K-Mart for many years and later joined the family business, Cassen’s Bait and Tackle in Grafton. After settling there, Shirley also became a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

For the past eight years, she resided at High Point Residence in Jerseyville, where she was surrounded by kindness and care. Shirley enjoyed knitting, most especially her signature dish towels, which she shared generously with friends and family, creating hundreds over the years.

Surviving are her nieces and nephews and their spouses: Jack and Mimi Bligh of St. Peters, Missouri; Mike and Joannie Cassens of Jerseyville; David and Cheryl Cassens of Michael; Jim and Helen Cassens of Jerseyville; Joe and Cathy Ghirardi of Wentzville, Missouri; and Mike and Diane Calvert of St. Louis, Missouri; along with many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister-in-law, John Cassens and William and Eileen Cassens; as well as a sister and brother-in-law, Eileen and John Bligh.
