Ruth Eileen (Flowers) Groppel

JERSEYVILLE -   Ruth Eileen Groppel, 95, died at 8:05 p.m., Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

She was born in Carrollton, Illinois on October 26, 1927, and was one of five children born to Earl and Myrtle (Singleton) Flowers.

She was an active and devoted member of the Fieldon United Church of Christ, and enjoyed participating in various bowling leagues throughout, and continued bowling until she was 89.

She worked as a cashier at Sinclair's West Grocery in Jerseyville, but her heart was at home, caring for her family.

She and her husband lived in the Rosedale area for many years, until relocating to Jerseyville after the Flood of 1993.   She will be best remembered as a devoted wife, mom and grandma, always putting their needs above hers.

She married Robert H. Groppel on September 8, 1945 at the Fieldon United Church of Christ, and together they were blessed with 55 years of wonderful memories before his death on April 11, 2001.

Surviving are a son and daughter in-law, Dewayne and Crystal Groppel of Jerseyville;  a nephew, whom she considered her second son, Denny Tepen and his wife, Candy of Jerseyville; three grandchildren and their spouses, Michelle and Terry Cordes of Carrollton, Marcus and Laura Groppel of Jerseyville, and Lucas and Sara Dickerman of Jerseyville; five great grandchildren, Dagan and Evan Cordes, Easton Groppel, and Mia and Mason Dickerman; a sister in-law, Lorene "Rink" Flowers of Godfrey; and a very dear friend, Maxine Somers of Jerseyville.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Flowers Jr. and Robert "Bud" Flowers; and two sisters, Helen Tepen and Delores Conroy.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of funeral services at 12 noon on Friday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.    Rev. Donna Puppilo will officiate.

Burial will be in Fieldon Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Fieldon United Church of Christ.
