PERRY ONTIS
FIELDON - Perry Edward Ontis, 74, died at 7:20 p.m., Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence after a period of declining health.
He was born in Nutwood, Illinois on August 26, 1950, and was the son of the late Lawrence and Isabella (Stiles) Ontis.
Perry grew up in the country alongside his siblings, beginning his lifelong passion of the outdoors. He was happiest when he was among nature, whether he was duck hunting, fur trapping, fishing or camping. He was also an accomplished cornhole player, and if he wasn't outdoors, he could be found piddling in his garage, as he was known to be a master at fixing anything.
He was a member of the Methodist faith and was a long-time member of the Rosedale United Methodist Church, and was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville. He was also a first responder, and served with the Fieldon Fire Protection District for many years.
He married the former Verna Kay Thompson on June 27, 1970, at the home of her parents in Kane, Illinois, and together they have been blessed with 54 years of marriage.
Surviving are his wife Verna Ontis of Fieldon, three children and their spouses, Larry and Michelle Ontis of Jerseyville, Gary Ontis of Fieldon, Dawn and Adam Smith of Grafton; and his grandchildren, whom he adored, five grand and four greats; as well as three sisters, Wanda Gundlach, Charlotte Suttles and Phyllis Cunningham, all of Jerseyville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard Crull, James Crull, Lawrence "Junior" Ontis, James Ontis and Jack Tully; as well as his sisters, Peggy Hazelwonder, Ollie Mae Delp, Opal White, Helen Ligus and Velma Martin.
Visitation will be on Thursday, February 20, 2025 from 4 p.m. until time of funeral services at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville. Revs. Bruce Baumberger and Bob Taylor will officiate.
Memorials may be given to the Fieldon Fire Protection District.
