MARGARET GREENWOOD
KANE – Margaret Esther (Baker) Greenwood, 85, passed away peacefully at 2:47 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2024 at the home of her son in O’Fallon, Missouri.
She was born on August 19, 1938 in Macoupin County, Illinois near Hettick, and was the daughter of the late Roy and Esther Lillie (Scharfenberg) Baker.
She graduated with the Class of 1956 from Greenfield High School and shortly after, married the love of her life, Kenneth Delbert Greenwood in November 1956 at the Providence Church in rural Greene County.
Margaret and Delbert resided in Kane throughout their 66 years of marriage, where they raised their family and were active members of their community. As they raised their family and grew older, they set a real-life example for their children and grandchildren of true love and devotion. They were fiercely committed to one another and lived their lives in the simplest of ways, focusing their attention not on themselves, but rather on what they could do for others.
She enjoyed watching the birds in her yard, most especially the Cardinals and Blue Jays. She was also a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, and enjoyed going to Busch Stadium to watch them play. In typical Margaret fashion, she considered the “cheap seats” high in the bleachers, to have the best view in the house.
Margaret centered her life around her family, and there was no greater joy in her life than that of being a loving wife, devoted mother and a proud and doting grandmother and great grandmother. She never raised her voice or had a cross word to say about anyone. She was there to celebrate every accomplishment and milestone in life, and when you were going through a hard time, her quiet and warming demeanor was a welcome sense of peace and reassurance that everything would be ok.
Left to cherish her memory is her son, Terry Greenwood of O’Fallon, Missouri; five grandchildren, Matthew Greenwood of Pacific, Missouri, Tyler (Danielle) Greenwood of Valley Park, Missouri, Vanessa (CJ) Gentile of Xenia, Ohio, Adam (Ashley) Blankenship of Vandalia, Illinois and Ethan Blankenship of Kane; six great grandchildren, Mabel, Noah, Kayla, Jackson, Scarlett and “Little Jack”; two sisters, Dorothy Johnson and Ruth Ballard; a brother, Wayne Baker; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Delbert, on February 3, 2023; her loving daughter, Debra Blankenship on November 16, 2015; four sisters, Marcella Baker, Joyce Baker, Thelma “Kate” Moore and Evelyn Sorensen; as well as two brothers, Gilbert and Donald Baker.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of Funeral Services at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 27, 2024 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
Burial will follow at the Kane Cemetery.
