LARRY CAMP

JERSEYVILLE – Larry Lee Camp, 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 5:40 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2024 at his residence.

He was born on December 9, 1940 in Shelbyville, Illinois and was the son of the late Frank Randolph and Lola Sibyl (Powell) Camp.

Larry graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1959, received a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1964 and later received a Master’s Degree in Extension Education from the University of Illinois.

He married Mary Jane Lesko of Gillespie, Illinois on November 20, 1965 in Gillespie and together they were the parents of two children, Michael Randolph and Elizabeth Jane. She preceded him in death on May 31, 1987.

He later married Mary Kathryn Carroll, daughter of the late William W. and Mary E. (Rennison) Carroll, of Springfield, Illinois on August 6, 1988 at Bethel Baptist Church in Jerseyville, Illinois and together they have shared in 35 years of marriage.

Larry began his working career with the University of Illinois Extension Service in 1964. He first worked in Jersey County as a Youth Advisor, then transferred to Knox County as Assistant Farm Advisor and ended his career in Clay County as Farm Advisor.

He enjoyed working with the 4-H members and was privileged to have many dedicated 4-H leaders, board members and staff in all the counties in which he worked. He enjoyed advising all the county residents who were requesting assistance and received numerous awards and recognitions, including State of Illinois Volunteer of the Year.

Following his retirement from the Extension Service, he became Owner/Operator of Central Illinois Soil Testing Service and also worked for several insurance companies as a crop adjustor.

Throughout the years, he also served as Rotary member and president of several clubs, and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award.

Larry was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, and served on numerous boards, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, drove church vans and buses, and participated in various building and maintenance projects throughout his lifetime.

He loved spending time with family and friends and held fond memories of gatherings and vacations with them. He especially enjoyed coffee with the guys, going on cruises, spending time at the ocean and the mountains.

In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and Fred Camp; a sister, Carrie (Camp) Stillwell; and a grandson, Trey Michael David Rhodes.

Surviving are his wife, Mary K. Camp of Jerseyville; his children, Mike Camp and Beth (Camp) Corbett; a grandson, Brayden Quinn Corbett; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of Funeral Services at 11 a.m., Friday, August 2, 2024 at First United Methodist Church, 1200 North Liberty Street, Jerseyville, Illinois, 62052.

Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
