JOSEPH SPRONG

HAMBURG - Joseph A. Sprong, 83, passed away at 1:15 p.m., Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Jersey Community Hospital.

He was born in Jersey County on June 9, 1942, one of twelve children born to the late Frank and Inez (Johnson) Sprong. Joseph married the former Thelma Varble on April 13, 1962 in Hardin, and together they were blessed with three children. She preceded him in death on July 28, 2021.

Joseph spent his working career as an Operator at Olin Corporation, where he built many lasting friendships, retiring after 40 years of dedicated service. Second only to his family, farming was his greatest passion, a love instilled in him from a young age. He took great pride in his land and especially enjoyed caring for his cattle.

Known as a jokester, Joseph treated everyone he encountered with respect and kindness. He was rarely seen without his hat—and if it wasn’t on his head, he was usually frantically looking for it.

Surviving are two children, James Sprong and Tina Sprong (Randi Kallal), all of Hamburg; three step-grandchildren, Jodesi Sprong (Michael) of Hardin, McKaila Marcy of Carrollton, and Cougar Marcy of Springfield; two great-grandchildren, Weston and Georgia; a sister, Betty Webb of Batchtown; and a brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Lois Sprong of Meppen.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Joseph was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Sprong and nine siblings.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 5, 2026 at Indian Creek Cemetery in Hamburg.

Memorials may be given to the family, in care of the funeral home.
