HERMAN GRAY

HARDIN – Herman Duncan Gray, 86, passed away at 12:27 p.m., Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at Calhoun Nursing and Rehab Center in Hardin.

He was born on October 3, 1936 in Trenton, Kentucky and was the son of the late George Franklin and Mary Belle (Hettenhouse) Gray.

He married the former Nina Jean Campbell on November 15, 1954 in Granite City, Illinois and together their marriage was blessed with their children and the joys of their grandchildren and great grandchildren that followed.

Herman was employed as a Crane Operator with Laclede Steel Company, retiring after 36 years of service to the organization.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, gardening and was a “shade tree mechanic”, spending countless hours working on cars. He also enjoyed sitting in front of a good slot machine from time to time, and he treasured each and every moment spent with his family.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Nina Gray of Hardin; three daughters, Paula (Phil) Hellis of Bisbee, Arizona, Talitha (James) Jackson of Granite City and Susan (Cary) Baze of Hardin; his grandchildren, Stacy Jackson, David Jackson, Megan (Jason) Wilson, Andy Baze, Jessica Baze, Karrie (Ryan) Middlecoff, Amy Lafferty (Ken Switzer), Wendy (Mike) Stong; his great grandchildren, Brady, Landon, Hunter, Madelynn, Dillon, Makenzie, Keegan, Layton, Kiya and Ryker; a sister, Loretta Seay of Guthrie, Kentucky; along with many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Hufstedler; a brother, George Gray; and a sister, Shirley Ruth Gray.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, June 5, 2023 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday.

Burial will follow at Fieldon Cemetery.
