Hazel Maag Obituary

HAZEL MAAG

JERSEYVILLE - Hazel Marie (Cresswell) Maag, 87, passed away peacefully at 10:41 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at her home in Jerseyville, surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born on May 29, 1938, and was raised in Elsah, Illinois, the daughter of Barnal Walter Cresswell and Mary Margorie (Lynn) Cresswell. Hazel graduated with the Class of 1956 from Jersey Community High School. On July 6, 1960, she married Ramon Maurice Maag, Sr., of Jerseyville, beginning a marriage that would span six decades and be rooted in faith, family, and devotion. He preceded her in death on December 26, 2020.

A devoted Catholic convert, Hazel’s faith was the foundation of her life. Together with her husband, she raised their eleven children in the Catholic faith, guiding their family with love, prayer, and a steadfast example of service. Hazel was a faithful member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, where she was actively involved in the Altar Society. She also volunteered her time at Jersey Community Hospital and with Meals on Wheels, always finding ways to serve others quietly and faithfully.

Hazel worked for many years as a rural mail carrier and retired from the Godfrey Post Office in 2000. Beyond her work and volunteer service, she was deeply involved as an active parent in Exploring and was known for her gift of bringing people together. Hazel loved planning gatherings of all kinds, whether it was a picnic, a tea party, or a large family celebration. Her home was a place of welcome, warmth, and joy.

Hazel was called home to meet her Savior, Jesus Christ, fortified with the Sacraments of the Holy Catholic Church, a reflection of the deep faith she carried throughout her life.

She is survived by her eleven children and their spouses, Ramon and Patti (Mulrean) Maag, Jr. of Kane, Joan Kuebrich of Jerseyville, Joyce and Steve Grummel of Godfrey, Sheila and Scott McGuire of Jerseyville, Patrick and Julie (Aldridge) Maag of Delhi, Rebecca and Joe Bechtold of Jerseyville, Edward and Robyn (Bottom) Maag of Jerseyville, Shannon and Vicky (Sharrow) Maag of Jerseyville, Betsy and Geoffrey Bemis of Golden Eagle, James and Clarissa (Underwood) Maag of Jerseyville, and Tina and Rob Hoffmann of Godfrey. She was a proud grandmother to 57 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her siblings, Ronald (Mary) Cresswell of Elsah, Pollyann (Bob) McCann of Wood River, Grace (Mike) Beiermann of Jerseyville, and Charles Cresswell of Carrollton, along with many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Hazel was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, John and Cheryl Cresswell.
