HAYDEN BENTLEY EBERLIN-BROWN
GRAFTON - Hayden Bentley Eberlin-Brown, 15, of Grafton, left this world at 1:22 p.m., Monday, August 18, 2025, at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, surrounded by the love of his family and the music that made him smile.
He was born on June 9, 2010, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton, the beloved son of Jonathan Brown and Kaci Eberlin.
At the age of 4, Hayden was diagnosed with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD), a rare and devastating disease that altered the course of his life and those who loved him. What it could never take away, however, was his spirit. Though the years brought countless surgeries, hospital stays, and the gradual loss of many abilities others take for granted, Hayden remained a light in every room he entered. Through a smile, a glance, or the unmistakable spark of his presence, he reminded everyone that he was still very much there, still fighting, still loving, still teaching.
Hayden became known far and wide, with his story touching hearts across the region. To know him, whether as Hayden, Hay-Hay, or Benny Boo, was to be forever changed. His doctors marveled at his strength, noting that he was one of the longest-living patients with MLD they had ever known. His resilience made him nothing short of extraordinary.
Hayden loved superheroes, especially Batman. Perhaps it was because, in so many ways, he was one himself. Like Batman, Hayden faced a life marked by trials and obstacles, but instead of fear or bitterness, he responded with courage, determination, and a quiet but undeniable strength. He didn’t need a cape or a mask, his superpower was his ability to inspire, to endure, and to unite people around love and hope.
Music was another passion that carried him through life. From country ballads like "Take Me to Church” to the infectious beat of his all-time favorite, “Apple Bottom Jeans”, Hayden’s playlist reflected the wide and joyful range of his spirit. It was only fitting that he left this world listening to that favorite song, with a smile that his family will never forget.
He lived moments of joy and wonder, including a special trip to Disney World through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. But his greatest joy was the love and closeness of family. He was deeply cherished by his mother, Kaci Eberlin of Grafton; his step-mother, Tracey Lamere of Alton; and his siblings, Kynleigh Jae “KJ” Eberlin-Brown, Dravyn Eberlin-Militzer, Drayke Eberlin-Militzer, Avada Brown, and Jolene Brown.
He also leaves behind his grandparents, Anna Eberlin of Dow, Dottie Kuebrich of Grafton, and Lori Brown and her companion, Wayne Beasley, of Wood River; great-grandparents, Barbara and James “Kory” Walter of Alton, John Kuebrich of Paducah, Kentucky, Bobbie Sievers of Alton, and Michael and Connie Hackethal of Grafton; aunts and uncles, Zachary Eberlin and his companion, Kim, of East Alton, Joey Eberlin and his companion, Akilah, of Dow, TJ Yates of Nakomis, Morgan Yates of Wood River, Blake Eberlin of Dow, Lorelei (Jerrad) Kesler of Florissant, Missouri and Jennifer Brown of Florida; along with numerous cousins, and friends he made throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jonathan Brown; a brother, Jonathan Brown, Jr.; a sister, Myah Eberlin-Brown; his grandfathers, Myron Eberlin and Christopher Kuebrich; and his great-grandparents, Gary and Mary Legate, Rita Kuebrich, and Red Sievers.
The family remains profoundly grateful for the community that surrounded Hayden throughout his journey. From the doctors and nurses who gave him tender care, to the neighbors and friends who lifted them up with fundraisers, prayers, and encouragement. Every act of kindness helped write Hayden’s remarkable story.
Private family services were held. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be given to the family, in care of Crawford Funeral Home, 1308 State Highway 109, Jerseyville, IL 62052, who has been entrusted with arrangements.
Though his time on earth was far too short, Hayden lived as a true hero. He reminded us all of the strength of the human spirit, the power of joy even in hardship, and the beauty of a smile that could outshine the darkest days. His legacy is love, and it will live on in all who knew him.
