Paul Dennis Phelan, 92, died unexpectedly at 8:05 a.m., Monday, January 28, 2019 at his residence.
He was born on June 27, 1926 in Fidelity to the late Robert P. and Irene (Barnett) Phelan and grew up in Fidelity, and was a 1944 graduate of Jersey Community High School.
He married the former Kathryn Louise Steckel on July 7, 1951 at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville and together their 67 years of marriage was blessed with two daughters.
Shortly after high school, Paul began working at Moore's Oil and Fertilizer in Jerseyville where he retired as an Assistant Manager after over 40 years of service.
After his retirement, he became the owner of 16 West Quick Shop in Jerseyville, which he owned from 1986 until 2014.
In his spare time he enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid bowler for many years. He was a longtime member of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville and was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are his wife, Kit Phelan of Jerseyville; two daughters and a son in-law, Janice Phelan of Jerseyville and Michelle and Thomas Goewey of Clarksville, TN; as as a sister, Catherine Waters of Godfrey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and James Phelan as well as three sisters, Mary Phelan, Theresa Schmieder and Dorothy Murphy.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m., Thursday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville with the Knights of Columbus Chalice Ceremony at 6 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Friday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville with Father Martin Smith officiating.
Burial will take place at the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville.
In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be given to St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools
